A total of 53 guest speakers from a wide range of careers, visited Foster High School on Thursday, April 29, 2010 for their second Career Fair. The speakers, which included individuals in the trades, artists, health care providers, engineers, and technology specialists, to name a few shared their personal career story with the students.

The event was the brainchild of our schools Advisory Committee (called Navigation 101) and was hosted in conjunction with the Tukwila Community Center. Selected students participated as student hosts to show the guest to the classroom and help facilitate the career sessions. Each of the Foster Students attended two different sessions.

The committee felt that many of our students have limited knowledge of careers outside of their frame of reference (the school district, the local grocery store, etc.). The idea is to give our students information on a wide range of career paths and let them make informed decisions about their future. This will also help students prepare for post-secondary options and maybe even encourage them to apply themselves to academics here at Foster.

There was a Job Fair the same day in the school’s commons. There students could pick up job applications for summer employment, learn about different career tracks, visit with college representatives. At least one student even received a job offer that day.

Without the help of our community this event couldn’t have happened. Thank you to everyone who participated to support our students.

DES MOINES, Wash. — Highline Community College President Dr. Jack Bermingham hosted on April 28 the Southwest King County Economic Development Roundtable Breakfast that explored ways for expanding collaborative efforts to improve economic development in the region.

“The college’s support for economic development remains a critical priority in serving the region,” said Dr. Bermingham. “We want to be both a partner and a resource in addressing the development challenges faced by our communities.”

King County Council Member Julia Patterson and Pete von Reichbauer co-sponsored the event and were joined by local mayors, city managers and economic development directors.

“I found the event useful in addressing economic development issues on a regional level,” said Federal Way City Manager Brian Wilson. “I look forward to future meetings where we can openly discuss issues of mutual concern and seek opportunities to collaborate and coordinate.”

One of the college’s top initiatives includes the Southwest King County Economic Development Initiative (SKCEDI), a collaboration between Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac and Tukwila, the Port of Seattle, King County and the college. The partners work together to build programs focused on increasing jobs and business opportunities in Southwest King County.

In addition, Highline has been a local leader in expanding economic development and supporting workforce development programs, including:

    * Small Business Development Center – The center provides counseling, resources and technical assistance for small and medium-size business owners, managers and entrepreneurs in Southwest King County.
* StartZone – The program offers free services to help women, people of color, immigrants and people with disabilities start or expand small businesses in Southwest King County.
* Procurement Technical Assistance Center – The center provides no-fee assistance to businesses wanting to market and sell their products and services to federal, state and local government agencies.
* Business Attraction Program – The program markets the assets and opportunities in Southwest King County to outside businesses, commercial real estate investors and developers, and companies in the trade and logistics sector.
* Puget Sound Welcome Back Center – The center helps internationally trained medical professionals work in the health care field in the U.S.
* Center of Excellence for International Trade, Transportation, and Logistics (ITTL) – The center promotes efforts to expand the local ITTL work sector through education and training and works with local industry leaders, associations, colleges and universities.

Highline Community College was founded in 1961 as the first community college in King County. With approximately 18,300 students and 350,000 alumni, it is one of the state’s largest institutions of higher education. The college offers a wide range of academic transfer and professional-technical education programs, with day, evening and weekend classes. Alumni include former Seattle Mayor Norm Rice, entrepreneur Junki Yoshida and Washington state poet laureate Sam Green.

DES MOINES, Wash. — Highline Community College hosted 24 Chinese college presidents and administrators for four days as part of Vocational Education Leadership Training (VELT) program, an international training program for Chinese administrators.

The training program gives Chinese administrators the opportunity to learn about the U.S. community college system and explore new strategies for inside and outside the classroom.

“The Vocational Education Leadership Training program provides an opportunity to expand higher education partnerships for Highline, and it is an excellent strategy to build closer and more productive ties to China,” said Highline President Dr. Jack Bermingham.

Beginning with the four-day orientation session on Highline’s main campus, the four-week training program includes two weeks job shadowing leaders at various community and technical colleges around the country.

The visiting presidents will end their tour with a program developed by Michael Allen, former Highline instructor and now associate vice president for International Programs at the American Association for Community Colleges (AACC) in Washington, D.C.

“The VELT program provides excellent opportunities for community colleges to learn about vocational and technical education in China and promotes bilateral partnership initiatives that engage administrators, faculty and staff in the U.S. and China,” Allen said.

The VELT program is administered by the AACC and China Education Association for International Exchange and financed by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The five-year program will end in 2013 with approximately 250 participants.

MOINES, Wash. — Highline Community College is replacing the printed class schedule delivered to residents’ homes with a new environmentally and cost friendly mailer, “The Quarterly Bulletin.”

“In this tough economic climate, we need to re-evaluate the needs of our students and community, while reducing costs,” said Highline President Dr. Jack Bermingham. “This new mailer was designed with our community in mind and highlights the various ways that community members can connect to the college. We will certainly leverage the college’s Website for greater access.”

The college expects to save more than $20,000 in printing and mailing costs and 6 million pages of paper for the 2010-11 academic year compared to 2009-10.

The new mailer features the college’s community offerings that are free to the public, as well as information on becoming a Highline student. The mailer is expected to be in residents’ mailboxes starting April 27.

The new version of the printed class schedule – featuring information designed specifically for students, staff and faculty – will be available on campus only. Up-to-date class listings are also available at http://onlineschedule.highline.edu.

The summer and fall preliminary 2010 class schedule is expected to be available on campus and online starting April 27.

Registration for fall and summer quarter begins May 4 for current students and May 24 for new students. Summer classes start June 21 and fall classes begin Sept. 20. For more information on becoming a student, visit www.highline.edu.

Highline Community College was founded in 1961 as the first community college in King County.
